The goal of the City of Richmond’s Community Development Plan for Steveston is to manage residential, commercial, industrial and community uses while at the same time preserving and enhancing the unique history of the area as a fishing village. As they walk the tightrope of economic development and cultural preservation, properties are torn down and replaced with buildings with more density. Long time residents and businesses are benefiting from rising property values and a growing consumer base but there is an impact on the natural environment such as the waterfront and Steveston’s parks and open areas not to mention the Agricultural Land Reserve on the eastern edge of the Village.
