en plein air

En plein air is French for outdoors.

Plein air painting is taking the studio outdoors and painting in natural light and under various weather conditions. In the 19th Century it was incorporated into the impressionist style of painting by well-known artists such as Renoir, Degas, and Monet. For a number of years now, the Village of Steveston has hosted the Grand Prix of Art. In the event, artists (mainly painters) are randomly assigned a location in Steveston and must complete their work in a specified period of time. The works of art are judged and then exhibited at the Britannia Shipyards where they are also made available for sale.
