the fundamentals

This is the list of books I used as a resource in building my fundamental understanding of photography. There are probably more that I will add because you can never have too firm a foundation for learning.

Understanding Exposure (Bryan Peterson)
An updated edition is scheduled for release in August 2010.

Understanding Shutter Speed (Bryan Peterson)

Photographing the World Around You (Freeman Patterson)
This book is based on Freeman’s week long workshop which I attended in August 2009. I have several other books by Freeman Patterson but this is the one that I would recommend.

The Photographer’s Eye (Michael Freeman)

The Photographer’s Mind (Michael Freeman)

The Photographer’s Vision (Michael Freeman)

Art and Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking (David Bayles and Ted Orland)
Photographers have tended to flock to Steven Pressfield’s “The War of Art” but I think this book is much better.

The View From the Studio Door: How Artists Find Their Way in an Uncertain World (Ted Orland)
If you’ve found your way to this page, this one’s a bonus for you. I haven’t talked about this book yet but I highly recommend it.

Within the Frame (David duChemin)

Visual Poetry (Chris Orwig)
