Last July my good friend Dorothy Brown showed me a book she had made of her 2014 trip to Paris. (You can see some of her work here in an essay Dreaming of Paris in December.) For some reason Dorothy’s book sparked in me a desire to learn more and to begin making my own books. I started small. I designed a couple of book covers that you will hopefully see in the new year. And then made a trade book called The House That Kimi Built using images from my Village Life project.
Right now I am working with Raymond Ketcham on designing a book for another photographer. This exercise is allowing me to experiment with the book form for images. Since the work is not mine, I have the luxury of detachment from the work that gives me a certain license to try out ideas without holding back.
A couple of weeks ago another such opportunity presented itself in the most unlikely of places, the office. Prior to the annual office Christmas party I had decided I would photograph it. There were no preconceived notions of might unfold but at the end of the day, I did want to make a book.
