photo of the day: spring forward
Yesterday I managed to get out and visit the Van Dusen Gardens. It was a beautiful spring day here in Vancouver with, wait for it…sunshine. Not exactly the best light to photograph the gardens so I decided to try a few exercises in EV compensation. The resulting look (-3.0 EV) was more like photographing a garden at night with a flash which I kinda like.

I really like this image, Sabrina.
Thank you Monte!
I like it too – the light is very much like a flash Am going to a garden tomorrow here in central Florida – will try it out.
One other thing you can try together with the EV comp. is to spot meter on the flowers. I didn’t do that but Ray mentioned I should try that as well. Let me know how it turns out.
Ok – will try that out. I think I can do this on the little sony camera.
So, did you see the Night Gardens feature in NatGeo? http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/03/night-gardens/newman-text
I did look for it Ed but couldn’t find it in the bookstore. You were right though, the writing in the internet piece was fabulous. Plus I learned a few scientific gems about a garden at night that I am going to try out this summer at my sister’s home. Nose first!
Love this – one of my favourite things to do whilst I’m waiting for the bassets to quit sniffing is to play with the light amongst the trees and ferns. I often think, who needs flash when you have exposure to play with.
Love the light on this image- it is like the flowers were bathed in their own spotlight, just so you don’t miss them! I would never think you can get the effect like that by simply underexposing, but it makes sense… need to give it a try next time.
