photo of the day – a dog’s life

I arrived home last night and am trying to get back into the groove of this other life. From the tweets and and emails I received last week, I know that you are all anxious to hear about my week at the Magnum Workshop in Toronto and I will try to share something more substantial as soon as I can. Part of it (as it always is) is needing time to reflect on the learning and what it holds for moving forward–or sideways–and part of it is finding time to write about my experience.

Today’s image is an “out”–an image rejected by Larry Towell for inclusion in the final presentation. I do still like this image and there were others similar to the look and feel of this one that were included in other presentations. Understanding what to select to show as part of your body of work is important and while this one was not selected, I am showing it here because this is a blog about learning. In fact, I will probably share all the rejects this week and then show the eight images that made it through the final edit.

And in case you haven’t guessed it, my project for the week was photographing dogs :)

That’s a brilliant picture! Makes me think of something Elliott Erwitt might have shot.

Remember you have to show more than 3 pictures now ;)

8 whole pictures! Be still, my heart :D

Remember now, you’ve set the expectation. No going back from here….

Ironically, that photo reminds me of me and my dog, Emily. My wife, I, and Emily cycled to Long Beach on Vancouver Island about 10 years ago in such a fashion as above. We bought a child trailer, converted it to a “dog” trailer then trained Em to ride inside. That trip was a highlight of my life.

Anyways, we look forward to seeing the rest of the workshop images and I hope to see lots of dog! :D

ooooo….I like that one. How did you choose the subject of dogs? Or was it chosen for you?
No wonder you are tired…you must’ve been running all week!

..sometimes I feel like I need more time for “processing” than I spent on the initial learning. :)

I’m also interested to know how you came to choose dogs as your subject for the week, – very challenging. What fun, ..really looking forward to this week, Sabrina! Thanks for sharing with us.
