I love bicycles. When I saw this one leaning against the wall, I knew I needed to photograph it. As I head to Toronto tomorrow for the Magnum workshop next week, this bicycle is a metaphor for what lies ahead. The big wheel is of course Larry Towell and that small wheel running behind, that’s me. I hope I can keep up.
Probably there won’t be time for me to blog from there so if you are interested in knowing how things are going, follow me on Twitter.

I always wonder how the people in the old days successfully mounted bicycles like that. It seems a bit complicated…
Damn straight I’ll be following you on Twitter
Those are called penny farthings.
Charlene: the beginning of this penny farthing race will show you how people get on them:

Thanks Tommy. It looks completely mad. Very cool though. Would be a fun ride, though not for klutzes. Too much can go wrong
Have fun and enjoy!
Tommy, that Penny race was great! Charlene, here is a penny video hosted by a co-worker of my wife.

Very cool, Chris. I have never ridden a penny farthing, which surprises me a bit given how much time I spend on and around bicycles.
A Penny does look like a fun ride.
That was an awesome video Chris!
Have a great time, Sabrina! I’m sure you will enjoy every minute of it, even if that means having part of “what you do” reconstructed from the ground… if it feels like that. But I’m sure you will come from the workshop with a different, if deeper view of how you approach photography yourself
Apart from that the bike phoot is beautiful, with intriguing lighting, a nice find and a beautiful capture. I somehow especially like the faint shadows cast by the bike and the tree!
Thanks for all the comments, everyone–and the videos. I really enjoyed those! They’ve put a smile on my face as I head out today.
Thomas, the first thing that grabbed me when I saw the bicycle was the lighting so I appreciate that you noticed it too
A bit late, but have fun in the workshop!
