As some of you know, my brother-in-law was in Japan at the time the earthquake hit. He is a lean management consultant and was on a Black Belt Lean Tour with his students when they felt the earth move in Sendai. Fortunately they were in the south near Nagoya where much of the car manufacturing is located. Like many Japanese people, his staff have worked very hard over the last few days answering the telephone, responding to emails from family members of the students, trying to connect loved ones, and organizing everyone’s safe return. We are very grateful that he is home with us now.
A long time ago I spent two summers teaching English in Japan and have made several return visits. What I am seeing now is heartbreaking. Today I wanted to share an image I made in 2009 when I was there for a visit with my sister and brother-in-law. Please pray for the people of Japan and for all the relief efforts. The emotional and physical needs in the days ahead as the country rebuilds are unfathomable. I hope to find a way to contribute. If you are personally aware of an organization or individual who is helping there, please let me know.

So happy to hear he is ok and back home now. My coworker only got through to her mother’s family yesterday. My thoughts and prayers are with all family relatives and the people of Japan.
Glad to hear your brother-in-law is safe and home. I only just yesterday was able to begin viewing some of the footage and news reports regarding Japan. I have visited the country twice in years past and dream of a return trip; I found the land beautiful, the people warm and welcoming, and the experience captivating. My heart shakes with the thought of what they are going through.

Thanks Ed and Brian. I had the chance to speak to my brother-in-law today and he said that it is tremendously sad to see what is happening there. I really hope I can get personally involved in bringing relief in some way.
It must have been frightening awaiting news. I’m glad to hear that your brother in law is safe.
Yes, prayers are being said.
