field of dreams #1
field of dreams #2
I’m back from my weekend in Alberta and working on processing some of the keepers to share with you. Today I’m posting two versions of the canola fields we saw for miles and miles as we drove to Longview. Actually there were many more frames but I wanted to get your point of view on these two. The first one is a bit more typical in it’s composition while the second one breaks the rules, at least in my opinion it does. I’d love to know what you think and which one you prefer and why.

A tough choice for me as open blue skies are a favorite subject. If pushed to choose, I’d prefer the top one. For some reason the second one seems to have something missing for me. Maybe a small farm house along the horizon would make it work for me. I have done this same experiment and feel these are both keepers. I would be interested in seeing them framed and hanging on the wall. Framing would also change our perspective. Okay, I’ll stop rambling.
Man, I love that blue!
Thanks for your feedback Monte. I agree that a lone farm house would have kicked these up a notch. Looks like a return visit to the cowboy trail is going to have to happen
As for the blue, it was pretty much out of the camera like that. It made for a great drive in a convertible with the top down. I think you would have loved it.
A lesson learned after review and back on the road.

Thanks Ray. I know that I’ve said I love a guy who asks questions but a man of few words might just top that
I love the yellow and blue combination. As for picture, for me it’s #1, but I would crop out the grass in the bottom a bit. Not quite to the extreme as in #2, just to the point were it meets the frame at the right.
I was also thrilled with the colour combination Beate. I’m going to play around with a crop and see what it looks like. I appreciate your thoughts on this.
Hey Sabrina, sounds like you had a great photowalk. I am caught between to be honest. There’s just a bit too much space in #2 for me, although I do like the more abstract view of the field. Maybe a zoomed-in tighter crop…? That blue is amazing though, especially contrasted with the yellow.
Hey Ed! I love how you’ve expressed your angst here because it is partly what I felt too. I wanted to get closer and lower down but we were shooting from the fence on the side of the room. Why anyone would want to keep us out, I just don’t know
Beautiful, Sabrina! I love the striking color combination and the clean compositions. I like #1 better because I like to see some of the detail of the flowers in front. It makes the field seem even more vast to me. I like Beate’s suggestion to crop out some of the grass at the bottom of the frame.
There’s definitely more detail in the first image that’s for sure. To tell the truth, I posted these images not for the feedback for myself but for how others see each image and why. Your statement about how the field seems more vast is exactly what I was looking to hear. Thanks Dorothy!
I’ve gotta go with #2. You know I don’t like rules.
Mark
Yup. It’s one of the many things I love about you, Mark. Thanks for wading in with your point of view.
#2, in its simplicity it’s an abstract of sorts, and I like the sky having such a loud voice in the image.
Hi Earl, as I mentioned to Dorothy, your comment is what I was hoping to hear–more of what the image is saying to you and why. #2 is certainly more abstract and I do like that aspect. Thanks for your comment; it’s always appreciated.
# 2 – reminds me of our time in Africa. And a lone tree might be nice – or a farmhouse butr I do like the abstact and big blue of it
maureen
Ain’t that the truth, Maureen? You and Earl are on the same page and that doesn’t surprise me at all. I love hearing your point of view!
At least, when making pure perfect empty skies, remove your dust spots!
Welcome to my blog, Matso. I think you forgot to leave a smiley face at the end of your comment
I did notice the dust spots after I posted the images. I was too excited to share these with my friends but definitely I will go back and clean them up.
Thanks for dropping by; I hope you will visit again so that we can get to know each other better and then this kind of feedback will come within the context of a friendship rather than the assault of rapid fire that the internet (and Flickr) breeds so well.
I’m sorry, I admit, I’ve been harsh! I do visit the blog often and I love your reflections on our beloved craft…
but I have to say, I’ve found nothing special appealing in these ones… you usually do way better! or it’s just my taste
matso
look up Mark Rothko Might make a difference in how you see these images.
Matso, no need to apologize; you are just what I need to raise the bar. Thank you!
Mark Rothko, Ray? Great colour in those abstracts!
I’m finally back!
I think I prefer the first one, because I like that addition of green in the bottom of the frame. In the bottom one, there are hints of green and I feel like I want to see more of it. This could be because I’m comparing the two photos, and maybe my reaction might be different if I saw them individually…
Oh and I just love the gradient blue sky! To die for.
Welcome back Preeti. I was wondering who kidnapped you
Thanks for your vote. I do agree that looking at them individually might change the way one would feel about either of these images.
#1 for me. I too agree with Beate about the crop, and I like the triangle of green in the first image. But, both are beautiful. I didn’t even notice dust spots!
