photo of the day

July 1, 2010  |  musings, photo of the day

I’d like to thank Mark Olwick for sharing the story of his recent success. If you follow Mark over on his own blog, you will know that he writes very thoughtful pieces from the heart. He now has a Facebook page so please join him over there. Tomorrow I hope you’ll come back as I will be posting another success story in this mini-series.

The photo of day is from my recent outing to Main Street where I was looking to create an image for my friend Stuart’s contest. What struck me about this building was the colour. When you see images made in faraway places, you will often see colours like this but you don’t ever think you might find them right here at home. This weekend why not head out and find the stories in your own backyard. I think you’ll be surprised at what you see when you stop thinking that you need to be somewhere else.

  1. I looked at this photo, and the shape of that photo made me think of Lost *hangs head in shame*

I think a lot of the time, we see a colour like this in a foreign/unfamiliar context and think “exotic”, but the same colour in a familiar context with its equally familiar code of what is acceptable (say, suburbia) provokes “Eeew, what were they thinking?!”

It’s so difficult to remove the understanding of what we take for granted. Imagine how many more beautiful things we’d actually see… like that beautiful colour for instance. Good on you for pointing that out.

(What sort of establishment is that?)

    • Yes training ourselves to see things anew is not easy. We have to be aware of what I call “already seeing” and make a deliberate effort to wipe the slate clean to really see what’s there.

  2. Ergh, the shape of that window, I meant!

  3. :) I’m pretty much loving the fact that Lucifer is hemmed in with bright blue and bright yellow! Nice!

    • Kudos to you Erin. I was wondering if anyone would see that. The yellow cab is the balance to the Lucifer poster. I’ll leave it up to each person to interpret what that means to them.

  4. Absolutely know what you mean about seeing things anew as you know too from one of my recent posts. The first thing I thought when I saw that image above was it was one from India!

  5. You and I are on the same plane. Especially regarding the image I got yesterday > http://bit.ly/cWkHBZ > If not for the English words, I would think I shot this on my trip to Nicaragua. Instead, it was about 1 1/2 miles from my office. :-)

    • Oh yes. I love that image from yesterday! You have great seeing–I’ll bet you could take us around the world in 80 images just where you live and go to work. Thanks for sharing :)
