rethinking learning

rethinking learning

At the risk of stirring the pot rather than the paint, here goes. My last post and the responses to it left me at a loss for words. And I don’t mean in the traditional sense that what was said was bad; none of it was. It was all good.

For the last few days I’ve been messing around with the images I made on the weekend at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. Sorry Mark K., no spurs or cow noses good enough to share.

just another manic monday

just another manic monday

It’s a holiday Monday here in my part of the world but it doesn’t feel like it at all. I had planned a leisurely fun post for earlier today and now it’s afternoon and I still have a million things I’d like to do.

One of the things I love about photography is the idea of it being a visual language that transcends all communication barriers. It can be as simple as you make it or as complex as you’d like it to be

musts and wants

musts and wants

Ever seen one of those job ads where they say “must have” and then list a bunch of requirements and then they list the assets–”the nice to haves”? Photography is a little bit like those ads.

Much has been written about how to find your vision as an artist and as a photographer but you won’t find any advice about it here. There are more sage visionmasters than I could ever profess to be but what I am is a student of those masters.

Here’s the last image I’ll share from my experiment to limit my lenses. For this one I used my “new” wide angle 17-35mm lens that I fondly call “The Fox” after I first borrowed it from my safari roomie, Krista Fox.

A very short post today illustrating my “one lens only” exercise but this time with my 300mm f/4. It was such a relief to have the longer lens with me but of course I saw other things where I wished I had one of my other lenses with me.

lessons from fedex

lessons from fedex

Two months ago I came upon an older post on the design of the Fedex logo via Kathleen Connally. The post was an interview with the designer of the Fedex logo you see everywhere. I have to admit that when I got to the fifth interview question I felt a bit stupid.

Just a quick post this Monday morning, folks. Fellow photographer Ed Brydon had excellent questions in response to my post on Lightroom last week. His questions reminded me of something that, once I understood, made a big difference to my learning curve.

This has been an exciting week for me with the launch of “The Chronicles of Learning Photography“. We’ve been able to attract 100 people and seen some sharing and learning already taking place. It’s the kind of stuff that really excites me. As a thank you, I have something special to announce today.

A few years there was an anti-drug television commercial that tried to illustrate your brain on drugs by showing a fried egg. Well the image above was my brain when I first started to learn Lightroom.

Yesterday I did a soft launch for the new Facebook Page for The Chronicles of Learning Photography.
