when a door is not a door

I wonder

I wonder
finn slough, richmond, bc

Finn Slough, just 15 minutes from my home, was settled in the early 1900′s by Finnish fishermen who came to Canada to escape poverty and apparent repression in Finland. They lived in float houses, net sheds, or even on their boats while they worked to establish their new lives.  It’s a fascinating place to create photographs and I’ll definitely be back to shoot there again.

Last year while on a Bryan Peterson workshop in Seattle, we walked past a non-descript building on the way to the shoot the skyline along the water. Bryan said: “Someone should take a picture of that door“. I looked at the door and kept on walking. So did most of us except for one person who later shared her image of the door. It was beautifully textured, wonderfully colourful in a weathered way, and whispered “I wonder…” to all of us. When I saw her image, I so regretted not shooting that door. My only excuse at the time was that the door didn’t speak to me at all. Fast forward one year and how things have changed.

This door represents a milestone for me. When I look at this image, I feel it reflects not only how far I’ve come in one year on my learning journey but also my growing ability to see creatively. I’m looking forward to hooking up with Bryan again this weekend. We will hit the Oregon coast on Thursday evening and probably be out shooting early Friday morning. There may not be much time for me to do regular posts this week but as usual, I’ll share my experience and images when I return. Have a great week everyone!
