shamper’s bluff, new brunswick

Shamper’s Bluff is a magical place. From the moment we arrived, all of us were under its spell, drawn to the beauty of the nature that enveloped us at every turn and to the endless possibilities as creatives. To tell you the truth, most of us were a little overwhelmed having read about this place and now standing on what my photog friend Dave T., calls “hallowed ground”. Everywhere you looked your mind thought about making images that reflected how you felt about the place. It’s no wonder that Freeman says that 75% of his photographs were made within one kilometre of his home.

The bog is an area that Freeman and his gardening partner, Joanne, have been working in for the last little while. After they removed the dead trees and overgrowth, these beautiful ferns emerged everywhere. Great subject matter to illustrate perspective, texture, and rhythm, these ferns also demonstrate Freeman’s point that not every photograph needs a central point of interest–another rule he debunks to support his belief that rules stifle creativity.

This week I’ll wrap up my posts on the workshop on visual design. There is just so much that I learnt that I’d like to share with you but there is really no substitute for attending the workshop yourself. I’d love to hear some more from you on what you think of this series of posts and what you’ve learnt, so please do leave a comment or two.

Again wow! What an inspiring place and makes it hard to go back home! haha. Our area gets more and more ‘landscaped’ which makes me sad.

I think this is one of my favorites so far. Great with that ‘filling the frame’ concept!
