It’s all about colour at the Van Dusen Gardens! Flowering dogwood trees greet visitors at the gate followed by the last whispers of Japanese irises and then garden comes alive with all the colours of summer. In this month’s photo I used two techniques that I would normally use on their own. I wanted to experiment with mixing the techniques to achieve something more textured and definitely abstract.
There are actually three exposures here and for each exposure I used the painting technique. To paint with my camera, I set the aperture to allow for a longer shutter speed. Then as I take the picture I swing the camera from left to right or top to bottom. My Nikon D80 has a Multiple Exposure setting where I select the number of exposures I want; in this case it was three. To get the textured look you see in today’s image, I took the first exposure painting from left to right, the second exposure from right to left, and the third from top to bottom. Then the camera automatically merges all three images into one. Enjoy!

FANTASTIC.
