world rose festival, vancouver
There are times when I especially miss my father and today is one of them: Father’s Day. A few years ago I decided that on these special days I would try to do something that we would have done together or something he would have enjoyed. When my sister and I were kids, he would spend a couple of hours on a Sunday taking care of his roses. My favourite was of course the one named Sabrina but he had others Maria Callas, Blue Moon, and Queen Elizabeth to name but a few. In a lovely coincidence the World Rose Festival was in town this weekend, so I headed down there today with my camera in hand.
It didn’t take me long to find Queen Elizabeth but I had no luck in finding Sabrina. Instead I happened upon Marilyn Monroe. My father was a big fan of Marilyn the actress and in fact I have his five copies of American Photo with Marilyn on the cover. I took this photo of Marilyn Monroe the rose. In black and white, it reminded me of the iconic photo from the movie The Seven Year Itch where she was standing on a subway grate in a billowing white dress. I think my Dad would have enjoyed this interpretation. Happy Father’s Day, Pa!

Sweet tribute. I miss my dad too… so very much.
Thanks Sue…I think we will always feel the loss no matter how many years go by.
Hope you spoilt Pat rotten yesterday–after all you had Saturday and it's only fair that he got Sunday
