out on the highway

Lions Gate Bridge

In July 2008, Google reported that there were over 1 trillion unique URL’s on the information highway based on results returned by Google Search. That’s one URL for every dollar estimated in the current US budget but you didn’t tune in for politics so let me get to the crux of my posting today.

There are a great many sites on the World Wide Web and once in a while I like to spend a few hours surfing to find some hidden treasures. My technique is not scientific by any stretch of the imagination; I start with the people I know or whose work I follow and see where that takes me. Take for instance Andy Biggs, my favourite African wildlife photographer. Today he posted a note that last week he had been the Workflow Friday guest over at Jason D. Moore’s blog. As I am currently taking a Photoshop Layers course, I was very interested to see how Andy processes RAW files to create his timeless sepia images. While on his site I noticed that Jason has an extensive blogroll, one of which is watchThisspace. Stephen Waterfall, a metallurgist in Hamilton, Ontario has crafted a feast for our eyes on his photo wall. Check out his most commented photograph titled “This way to the Pearly Gates“. The last stop on Jason’s highway was the Weekly Photo Tips and Tricks but I didn’t stop there long as I found a link to Richard Legg’s website. Richard is a commercial photographer in Utah and as I am taking the Microstock course, I found Richard’s website to be informative especially his tips and tricks section. Richard is also on Twitter so I added him to my list of people I’m following.

There aren’t too many people I follow on Twitter, yet. For me, the jury is still out on microblogging mostly because I am not as connected as one should be to make the most of the concept. Still I check in to see what’s new for the ShutterSisters, a collaborative photo blog for expert and amateur women with a passion for photography. Right now they are part of “Name Your Dream Assignment“, a contest for photographers with a creative, inspiring photo shoot idea. The winner will receive $50,000 to make their dream assignment a reality. Please think about voting for the ShutterSisters’ project Picture Hope.

Speaking of shutter sisters, today I visited the PixelatedImage Vision Collective Forum to view the weekly image critique which is posted each Monday. I took the plunge and emailed Nicole Gibson to add my name to the list of submitters. She has replied and I will be posting my image for feedback the week of May 4 – 10. Yikes! By the way, Nicole was the 2008 recipient of the Vincent Versace Guru Award so check her website for her winning image and many others that are sure to motivate you to pick up your camera and join a photo workshop with a master. This is my last stop on this trip along the information highway; I hope you enjoyed it.

I agree. This one looked so much better in B&W than in colour!
