This evening to celebrate my sister’s birthday, we went to Ichiro in Steveston, an authentic restaurant in what used to be a Japanese fishing village. I used this occasion to challenge my brother-in-law, David, to a Canon shootout as we both have Canon point-and-shoot cameras–mine a G9 and his a G10. We’ve noticed that the macro ability on these cameras is quite good so the challenge tonight was to capture images of our dinner using only the macro setting.

I am sure that both the patrons and the restaurant staff were highly entertained by our antics but we were having so much fun and quite oblivious to their reactions. As quickly as the food arrived at our table, we set up our shots and clicked away. Above is a shot of my sister’s saba which, like many japanese dishes, was carefully presented with as much thought given to how the dish looked as to how it tasted.

David captured great shots of the sushi and tempura and overall I would say that he won the shootout. I do think that I won the crane contest though with the image above. I hope that when we travel to Japan later this year we will have another duel as the food there is fantastic and that means even more fabulous photographic opportunities.
