abstract thinking

That morning there was a beautiful sunrise but with no landscape in sight I fired off a few shots of the aircraft and then I started to play around with different points of view. What I landed up with was a group of abstract images based on colour. These types of images don’t appeal to too many people for they lack the shape and form that tell people what to think when they look at the photo. These images force the viewer to move beyond prescription and to think, reflect and make a decision for themselves on what the photographer is trying to say with their image.

Our last assignment for Robert’s Composition class was to take photographs that express emotion such as anger, fear, joy, surprise and curiosity. As an added challenge we were not allowed to use people or animals or parts of either such as hands or feet. The images in this posting were my first attempt at trying to capture emotion. For me the image above conveys curiosity as it is a mix of blues and pinks and oranges and at first glance, people do not realize this is a picture of the skies at sunrise. You have to spend time studying the image to realize what it is and in doing so the viewer will have embarked on a journey of wondering and questions. The image to the left conveys joy. For me its warm pink glows leaves the viewer with a feeling that envelops them with the promise of a great day ahead. My plans are to enlarge and print the series and to use them as art on my walls at home. They may be far too abstract for many but hopefully for some, they work.
