looking for birds

When I was growing up, we had a dog named Lady who was a cross between a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a German Shepherd. I remember driving home with her in a big box in the back of our Jeep and from that day on she was a part of our family. Each morning she would push open the door of the bedroom I shared with my sister and it would hit the foot of my bed and wake me up. Then she would lick our faces to wish us good morning. I have lots of memories of Lady like the time she came home with a fish and we couldn’t figure out if she stole it or if she actually caught it in the river. Towards the end of her life Lady developed arthritis in her hind legs and she had to be put down. Sadly I don’t have any photos of her other than some rather poorly composed shots of her running around in the garden.

waiting

This past summer we said good-bye to another beloved member of our family, Ninja. He was my sister’s cat and had lived with her in London, Michigan and here in Vancouver for 18 years. Ninja was quirky and quite loveable and could be best described as a cat who thought he was a dog. He could shake a paw and stretch on command. Come to think of it, Ninja also had a routine to wake me up in the morning. He would jump on the bed and push my cheek with his paw until I woke up. If I made the mistake of opening my eyes, it was game over. My sister has lamented that I didn’t take any great photos of Ninja. In my defense I only recently took up photography more seriously and didn’t get a chance to take photos of Ninja when he was in his prime.

Now I am going to take up the challenge of the survey requests for more photographs of animals and pets. Above is a picture I took of Tama, one of my sister’s cats. She likes to linger in the garden and stalk the birds. AboveĀ is a photo I took today on the boardwalk in Steveston. This beautiful dog was sitting patiently waiting for her owner and sat long enough for me to take a quick shot. I really enjoyed interacting with her to take this photo and feel comfortable shooting more photos of pets whenever I see them and not only when requested.
