Flying into Ottawa today I read a magazine article about what inspires photographers. The tagline was “finding your own photo style is a journey, not a destination”. For some time now I have been living with the realization that my life has been more about destinations than the journeys. My new love of photography and even this blog are part of my efforts to change this. If, as the writer suggested, our photographic style reflects our personality then any effort to be more conscious of the present rather than the future will be seen in the pictures that I take. But how does one go about transforming a lifelong paradigm into something new?
During yesterday’s walking tour, we stopped at the rear of the Sun Yat-Sen Gardens where the instructor did a couple of readings, one of which was from Freeman Patterson’s Photography and the Art of Seeing. What struck me about the reading was the notion of letting go of one’s preoccupation of self to more completely experience the joy of photography. So today I picked up Patterson’s book and hope to learn much from reading it. Sounds like the beginnings of a great journey to me.
A word about the photo in this posting. Not having much luck in the Gardens themselves, I saw these Chinese characters hanging on the door of the store. They reminded me of the balloon shot I took in Seattle because of the colours and repetition. I wonder what this photo says about me? Comments are most definitely welcome.
