last hurrah

This month’s theme from my photo circle is The End of Summer. With a limit of four photos to post, it’s a good thing there are other avenues to share some images for September. The only challenge left is to take photos or should I say, to create images that reflect the change in season. Since reading Bryan Peterson’s book Understanding Exposure and taking his course by the same name, I’ve become more conscious of the difference between taking snapshots and capturing images that evoke an emotion through a creatively correct exposure.

Understanding this difference is much easier than successfully pulling it off. One of the best places to capture the transition from summer to fall is in the garden. On Saturday I used my sister’s backyard to hone my skills in taking dew drop shots. With my newly acquired Kenko extension tubes from Japan, I spent an hour lying on the grass. Bryan’s tips on taking these types of photos helped immensely i.e. f/16, good backlight, and focus on the grass and not on the dew drop. While the shots were better than any I have taken to date, they still left something to be desired. At least there will be a few more good days left in the month to pursue perfection in this department.

Monday being Labour Day, I made my way to Van Dusen Gardens (VDG) to see what they had to offer. Weatherwise, the day started out promising with cloudy skies which would help cut the contrast but the forecast was correct and before long the sun burst out. Still I was able to get some good photos such as the image posted here. I did some post-processing to improve what mother nature declined to provide. One more thing about this image; in my recent readings, I came upon the concept of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio as they apply to photography. I may be wrong but I think this flower is an example of the number of petals being a Fibonacci number. Stay tuned for more photos!
